
Almora is a glorious town with a long past history. Kashaya hill on which Almora is built finds mention in the Skanda Purana scripture. In the year 1560 emperor Kalyan Chand of the Kumaon region made Almora his kingdom capital. During that time it was recognized as Rajapur and if you will see some ancient scriptions you will still find Rajapur carved on it. chand Synasty ended when Gorkhas from Nepal overtook this area in the year 1790. In the year 1815 British defeated gorkhas and built a small dynasty and a cantonment.
Alomora Bazaar is around 1.5 km long and covered with the Kota stone slabs that have replaced traditional hundred year stone slabs also known as old patals. You will feel delighted when you will walk through the streets of the Bazaar. You will find places like Karkhana Bazaar, Jauhari Mohalla, Tamta Mohalla, Malli Bazar and Khajanxhi Mohalla here. Tamta Mohalla is close to the cantonment. Copperware is among the traditional crafts of the Almora. Some of the amazing Coippersmiths still work in their traditional region in the Tamta Mohalla. When you walk through this region air reverberates with sound of the wooden hammers on the metal and you can spot Tamta community carving the brass utensils and few other decorative items.
